A MELBOURNE TRAGEDY
MURDER OF A CONSTABLE. United Press Association — By Electrio Telegraph — Copyright. (Received Jan. 19, 9.34 a.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 1,9. A publican at Auburn was aroused early in the morning, by tho sound of groans proceeding from the bur. He found the door open and a constable named Long lying on the floor with a shot wound in the back of his head. Long died on his way to the hospital. There are indications that he sairprised a spng of burglars, and was shot while investigating.
