THEATRE ROYAL.
~~r~* — , There was a good attendance at the Theatre Royal on Saturday night to sec " Sherlock Holmes," and the piece will nob scon be fojrgotten by tliose who have interested themselves in Sir Conan Doyle's creation and its successful production in Christchurch. As Sherlock Holmes and his "only love" faded from, view on Saturday night thei^e was a touch of pathos in the passing of this -great play and in the silent contemplation of the final scene. This evening, Mr J. C. Williams's combination will stage Mr , Justin Himtly M'Carthy's romantic play/ "If I Were King." It has run " Sherlock Holmes " very closely for popularity. It was produced in New York for twelve months, and then proved the success of the London season at the St James's Theatre. This was followed up in Australia, and a short time ago Dnnedin theatregoer^ showed their appreciation by crowding the theatre nightly. Mr Cuyler Hastings will take the leading role, that- of Francois Villon, a Parisian rnyst&rer, writer and poet, who, having been bragging in his cups as to what he would do if he were only King, unexpectedly finds .himself elevated to that lofty position by the French monarch, Louis XI. Mr Justin M'Carthy has woven around his plot-many thrilling situations, in which wnrriors in armour wage mimio war, and tell their love stories with' the sweet phrases of the p&riod in such a manner as carries the audrence back into bygone centuries. The season will probably terminate on Wednesday evening, ' unless arrangements can bo completed with the Union Company to. delay the Rotomahaaa until after the performance on Thursday evening. Even this would only allow of four presentations of "If I Were King." The ; season cannot possibly be extended, as the company is billed to open at Wei- ■ flington on Friday next, at the Opera House. Intending patrons should book early, as there is sure to be a great demand for-seats for the three or four farewell performances, -i--' ' "~" "" ■'"■ "■ "-" " v
