ACCIDENT AT SUMNER.

There was a narrow escape from a seri-ous-accident n.fe Stunner this afternoon. The tram which left the city at noon reached* tha seaside shortly before one o'clock, and, as is the common practice, the engine attempted to" fl/^hunt opposite Brooking's Hotel, running oa ahead of the cars, which followed 1 by their own momentum. '-The practice has often been condemned as dangerous, and the truth of. this was demonstrated to-day. The front car left the rails, and, turning almost at right, uragl«s, crashed into the Coronation ■memorial, which was some time ago placed at the edge of the footpath. The heavy stone monument was shifted bodily some inches, and will have to foe returned to its former position, probpibly at considerable expense. No one was injured on .the car, although several people were rather badly shaken. Two other cars also left the rails. ■'
