GREATER CHRISTCHURCH.

If we eliminate the suggestion of selfinterest, it is difficult tp find the motive which guided the delegates from tbe Suburbj»n "Borough Councils dn. tho attitude which they adopted towards the Greater Christchurch schenie last night. They havo had ample time to inquire into the merits of the soheme. For months past it has been, before them. The newspapers have discussed it, thp public' has debated it in the columns pf the Press, experts have published their conclusions respecting it, an-d tlie Councils themselves have spent a little pf their valuable time considering it. And yet thp moment when indications point to these deliberations reaching a definite issue is chosen by the Councils, or, at least, some of tbem, to throw cold water on the scheme. Por • cold water, in copious quantities, som© of the delegates to last night's meeting undoubtedly tried to throw. Their appeals for more time to discuss the -matter, and their complaints of their lack of infpnni^tion concerning it, suggest nothing else. Bufc, happily, though some of the suburban Councils still persist in their determination to kill the scheme; by procrastination, tliere is another and a greater ' force which means to cany it through with as little delay as possible. A public opinion in* favour of Greater Christohurch is slowly but surely growing, and it is this force which is ultimately destined to overcome the petty objections now bejng raised tp the proposal.
