Drunkenness.— For this offence four first offenders were each fined 5s and cosfSjin default twenty-four hours' imprisonment, and another first offender was convicted and discharged. (Before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M.) Civil Cases. — In the following cases the defendant -did not enter an appearance, and: judgment was given for plaintiff by default with costs: — "Lyttelton Times" Company v. J. Hughes, claim £5 10s 8d ; S. G. Umyin v. J. Hague, £6 9s 6d ; Booth, Macdouald and Co. v. N. J. Marshall, £1 7s Id : E. Derretc v. L. Howard, £10 15s ; Johnston, Mills and Joyce v. J. S. Bradbury, £5 12s 6d; Clarks and Co. v. S. M'Clelland, £17 13s; J. Pasche v. E. Pasche-, 10s costs and possession of premises ; R. O. Thompson v. R. Dempsey, possession of premises to be given up in a week. — W. A. Lawmico v. J. Linden, claim £2 10s. Mr Joynt appeared for the plaintiff. Judgment was given for plaintiff. — Ellen M'Lean, v. W. Rainbow, claim £7 16s. Tho ."ase had been partly heard on 'a previous occasion, and expert evidence was now called in support of ;u counter-claim, in which the defendant sought to recover damages for injury to his property, caused by the plaintiff damming up a natural water-course which ran through defendant's land. Mr Slater appeared for the plaintiff and Mr Hoban for the defendant. — Teresa Chisnall v. Jane Chisnall, claim £10, the value of a sewing lmcliine alleged to have been wrongfully removed. The defendant denied all knowledge of the machine and the plaintiff accepted a non-suit. Mr Donnelly appeared for the plaintiff and Mr Joynt for the defendant.
