A VALUABLE COLLAR.
Three men, were dismissing the sums of money which pawnbrokers will advance on articles of olothing. "The rates are low,'' one of them said,, "you cam only get, as a rule, ten shillings on a five-pound overqoat." The second man nodded his head in as* sent, but the third said : " Oh, you chaps don't know anything. If you know how to go about it, it is possible to get a good deal more than you are offered at first. I don't mind taking a bet on tha* I can get a sovereign on the collar I'm wearing." It was an ordinary turn-down linen collar, but the speaker was known to be a practical joker, and his hearers hesitated about accepting the bet. - Finally, thef took it on these terms : £10 to £10 that Blank cannot get a sovereign on his collax. Blank then took the collar ofi, unfolded it, called for pen and ink, and wrote on th» linen: "London, May 20, 1902. The London and Suburban Bank. Pay to the order of John Jones, £1. Henry Blank." The collar was -now a cheque. It was taken to the bank, whioh duly cashed it..Thus Blank won his bet.
