Work has been commenced on the erection of a large building for the Stratford branch of the Bank of New South Wales. On Thursday, Sept. 25 t a benefit concert is to be tendered to- Miss Christabel Wells by the Musical Union and a number of influential musical friends. Miss Wells, whose pronounced musical talents 'have been always at the 'disposal of local musical societies, is about to proceed to Germany, where the better cultivation of her gifts can be undertaken, and as no (musical scholarships are available for talented young New Zealanders, he,r friends have hat upon the happy alternative of assisting her in the practical manner already referred to. Mr F. M. Wallace and Mr Lund have the preparations for the concert in hand. The Musical Union's orchestra is to contribute short, bright numbers, of a not too classical nature, by Weber, Lachner, and Gounod, and songs will be sung by Mrs. Burns, Miss Graham and Mr H- M. Beeves. Mias Wells herself will play the solo parts in Viotti's concerto for the violin and orchestra and a Weber concertstuck for piano andi orchestra.
