WHERE WOMEN ARE SCARCE.
A SHORTAGE OF 70,000 IN SOUTH AFRICA. An article in the "Quarterly Beviaw" contains some statistics showing the dia- ; parity between the numbers of white men and -white women in. South Africa before tihe war. » The approximate excess of maleg over females is set forth as follows:—
" In a population of whites only numbering about 800j000 in all, this deficiency of •women seems at first sight almost incredible," says the writer,; " an,d it is the more remarkable and toe more "deplorable inasmuch as, beyond a doubt, the greater part of the defioiency exists among the British section of the population. "It means tihat about one man ii* every four of the British in '.South Africa could never hope to find a wife, whether tyutwh or English, befotra the vnx. ,Tkt> actual disproportion in the immediate future will be far greater." :
