THE SMALLPOX PATIENTS.
A SURGEON'S OPINION. [Pkb Press Association.] AUCKLAND, August 11. Dr Bakewell, who returned with the Ninth Contingent, does not believe 1 that Calioway 'has smallpox. He has a practical experience in epidemics, gained- in England and Trinidad, and he is perfectly certain that the case either is not smailpox or that the report of Callbway's recovery is incorrect, as no case of smallpox develops eruption under eight days. Moreover, there is no record of smallpox spontaneously arising." From the fact that Calloway is said to be better within four or five days Dr Bakewell concludes that he must be suffering from chickenpox. WELLINGTON, August 11. The lastest report, with regard to the Britannic's sick list is as follows :-^-Lunn (Oollmg#ood) has improved, Nicholson a,nd Wooden (Canterbury) are slightly better, Ryan, Hakaru (Auckland), Fieetwood (Turakina) and Brown (Thames) are still very ill ; but Page (Hokianga). is doing very well indeed.
