BITTER REMARKS.
♦ A FRENCHMAN ON NEW ZEALAND. THE MAORI IN FRENCH EYES. The modern Maori is the subject of bitter criticism in an admirable book entitled "A Season in New Zealand," written by ftf. Gaston de S-sgur, and just published in Paris. The author styles the Maori "half savage, half European, drunken, thievish, vicious, lazy, and degenerate," and comes to the conclusion that the Anglo-Saxon miay be a " marvellous colonist," but he is only a " mediocre civiliser ; he destroys the native or debases him." . M. Segur asserts that the curse of strong drink is greater in New Zealand than in Britain even among the whites. Apart from this criticism the author is enthusiastic over the colony.
