Santos Dumont ascended front' tbd Pare Prcstatique and' easily rounded tha 'Eiffel Tower at a height of 250 metre*. Ha . regained his point of departure in 1765 seconds, while at a second attempt he covered, the distance in 1840 seconds. While returning he encountered a strong wind. Th« Aero dub Committee decided that J£ Dv« , mont had failed to win the Deufcsclt prize by forty-four seconds, although Deutseh personally considered that M. Dumont had won.. -The crowd who- witnessed the as-* cent showered flowers on M. Dumont. (M. Sain.tos Dumont made a previous at* tempt to win the Deutsoh) prize on July last, but failed when " wilMn sight , t-i port," owing to a breakage of the delicate steering gear of his air-ship. The prize is offered for a. practical air-ship, but the ron'ditdons are that the winner shall leave Sfc Cloud, go round' the Eiffel Tower, and bo back at the starting-place within thirty minutes. The distance is about nine miles.)
