LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Messrs H. Matron, ami Co. sold 1 5£ acres of land at St Albans, with house and outbuildings, by auction to-day, on account of Mr B. Mora. From April .-. 1 to Sept, 14,' 1,084,526 sheep '■were carried on the Government railways, an increase of 159,281 head, as compared with the same period of last year. Tbe sniaxj> of Captain Johnson^ harbourmaster in Wellington, is to be increased irom. £400 a year to J8450 (the maximum . amount allowed by the Harbour Board regulations). The increase (says the " Pest") is to take effect from Jan. 1 next. The necessity for a re -survey of Wellington Harbour has been apparent for Some time past (says the " Post ".). A number of ttrors in the existing charts are known, *nd with a view to having them correotedl the Harbour Board has decided to ask that H.MiS. Penguin should make a complete survey, of the port at an early date. The Inspector of Native Schools has proposed to the trustees of the late Sir Donald M'Lean Schokurehips at Te Aute College that some of the money available, £105 annually, should be diverted , to: certain scholarships at the Mam- primary 'schools in ..the colony. It has been decided, however, not to make any alteration in tbs M'Lean Scholarship condiitvons, so for as the coming examinations are concerned. A well-attended meeting of teachers, representative of aJI parts of North Canterbun-, was held in the Normal School this morning to consider the Teachers' Salaries Bill now before Parliament. MIT'J. Vosa occupied the chair. Onthe motion of Mr J. G. L. Scott, seconded by Mr P. Bowler, it was unanimously resolved — "That this meeting of teachers strongly urges the- Government to get the Teachers' Salaries Bill passed. into law this session." As showing thait the teachers of North Canterbury are unanimous in dssiring 'a colonial scale of salaries, it is reported thatMr L. Watson obtained the signatures of nearly forty female teachers and over* fortif? male teccbers in the short space of half an hour to-day to a petition to the Premier, asking him to do his utmost to have' <tit« colonial scale passed this session. Mr Wiite states that so far not oue teacher has declined to sign the petition. The Wooston Band, under the conductorship of Mr A. F. Litligow, will play the following programme on the rotunda, Victoria Square, next Wednesday evening, ennxmencing at eight o'clock : — Overture, "The* Courier" (Lithgow) : waltz, ""Elsinore " (Bulch) ; grand selection, " Tannhauser*"' (Wagner) ; march, " Fighting Mac " (Lithgow) ; selection, " Song of the Ocean " (Round) ; waltz, " Tasma's Beauties " (L:th-; gow) ; selection, " Songs of Scotland * (Hound) ; fantasia, "Le Cirque " (Lithgow) ; march, " Defiance " (Tayler) ; National Anthem. Climatic and other misfortunes which, may fairly be classified under the proverbial .heading of " circumstances over which it.- had .do. control," left the Canterbury Cricket Association at the cloys of last j' season -in' <Jebt to the tune of about £50. The Hagiey. Park Ground authorities also found it necessary, in the interests of Canterbury cricket, to expend more upon the Park ground tJhan came to .them in the. way of revenue. In order to liquidate these liabilities, and if possible provide a surplus, for future operations, a number of leading local amateurs intend to produce Sydney Grundy's charming comedy, "A Fool's Paradise," which, by the way, has not previously been played in New Zealand. Two 'performances will bs- given, on Wednesday and Thursdaj' next. The cause i 3 cue which will appeal to many, but outside the personal element thus introduced the faqt that the cast for th« comedy is an exceptionally strong amateur one suggests that the performance itself will be a specially pleasing one. The .box plan will be opened at Messrs Milner and Thompson's on Monday, at 11 a.m. Examinations for degrees, honours, senior scholarships, law, and medicine -will be iheld by the New Zealand University in nine centres, commencing on, Nov. 11.
