The steamer City of Lincoln has put »»' in distress. She bad a terrible experienca while on the way from Melbourne 1 to Durban -with) 700 remounts on board. She encounteredi a terrible gale off Cape Borda, compelling her to lay-to for the sake of her stock, many of whom were dreadfully knocked about and! frantic' with terror. Then the main crank of the shaft broke and the vessel lay helpless in the trough of the sea, which 'broke right over her, staving in her bulwarks. Hone-boxes were • swept overboard and" d!own the hold, where the horses lay piled' in heaps dfead and dying. A passing steamer stood by, and when the gale moderated somewhat twice got hawsers aboard", but they broke, and she had to give up the attempt. Eventually, after three days in tine gale, the City of Lincoln's engineers managed to disconnect the broken engine, and^fitted machinery which enabled her to steam to port at low presEure. On her .arrival the vessel presented an extraordinary appearance. Her decks were piled With dead and dying horses. Altogether she lost about 200.
