At a, special meeli;:g of the Chamber of Commerce, to consider the Federal tariff, the following resolution was carried : — " That, notwithstanding tdial/ the Federal tariff may to some extent piejudic-kliy ulfeeb the exports to Australia of New Zealand produce, 'this Chamber does not think i't would be wise, expedient or statesmanlike to adopt any retaliatory measures by imposing prohibitive duties «gaii:.?t the Commonwealth, but is of opinion tluit tlie Federal tariff should be met by New Zealand seeking fresh mid permanent, markets for her prcdnce." The Chamber decided that it. could not seii its way to adopt the suggestion of the Duntdin Chamber lela- : Uve to subsidising steamers.
