Tho existence of the city by-law on the subject should be made widely known, and should be enforced. At present the by -law. j obviously, "'as a dead letter, .he hoped that the Mayor, as chief citizen of Christ - church, would inaugurate a campaign against, that subtle and deadly enemy of mankind, tuberculosis. Councillor C. M. (Jray s-a-id that Inspector Ellison had been waited upon in vpgard to the by-law against expectorating in the streets. The police promised to do what they could. (If course, 'the matter was ; i difficult one. Noties*. as Mr Blackburne suggested, might be •erected, cautioning people against expectorating on the foot-paths, but something fshould be done to prevent expegtoraiion on the streets. # He was glad that tho OJiris-tchurch. City Council vras in advance of all other local bodies in Australasia- in this direction. He moved that the letter should be received, that Mr Blackbume should l>9 thanked, and that the By-laws Committee should be instruct--ed to see iihat placards are erected, on tire lines suggested. Councillor H. B. Sorensen seconded the motion, wbiah was carried. A letter on the same subject- was received from the Canterbury Women's Institute.
