MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.

• The fourth annual meeting of the Christchurch Tailoring Trade Industrial Union of; Workers was held on Tuesday, July 12, Mr J. Sanderson (president) in tiie chair. The bal-ance-sheet was read'and adopted, and a vote of thanks was passed to the retiring officers. It was decided to urge the Government to make provision compelling all tradesmen taking orders for tailoring to employ tailors or- tailores£es, and to insist on the work being done in the workshops to •the firm taking the orders. The 'Secretary was instructed to send the resolution to all i he Canterbury" members of Parliament. The election of officers Tasulted as follows :— President, Mr C. G. Whiteman ; vice-president, Mr J. N. Tucker ; treasurer, : Mr W. Godfrey; secretary, Mr Ernest Gohns (re-elected) ; committee — Miss iM. Lawson, Miss M. Cook. -Messrs Flesher, T. Hill, W. Watson, M. A. Baxter, A. Blunt and J. W. Cuagg ; auditors, Messrs W. J. Roberts >and # G.: Dennis ; delegates io th« Canterbury Trades and Labour Council, Messrs Ernest Gohns, C. G. Whiteman, J. Willis and M. A. Baxter. The railways of Great Britain pay £1400 .a day, on an average, in compensation, as against £100 ft day in> 1860.
