COUNTERFEIT COINS.

ALLEGED UTTERING TO TRAM GUARDS.

At the Police Court this morning, before Messrs W. H. Cooper, J.P., and J. Hay, J.P., John Carroll, on remand, was charged with having, on July 1, at Ghristchurch, uttered a counterfeit coin on one Nicol Kidd, knowing the same to have been counterfeit. Sub-Inspector Black asked to ■witßdf-aw this charge, a fresh one having been laid. Mr MCoarael, who appeared for the accused, said he thought that the Bench should dismiss the charge in that case, and 'not leave it hanging over accused's head. The Bench " allowed the charge to be withdrawn. The accused was then charged that he "did, on July 1, at Obristchurch, obtain from one Niccrl Kidd, a tram guard in the employ of the Canterbury Tramway Company, the sum of 9s 6d in money* and a tram ticket, of the total value of 10s, by means of a coin, representing a halfsovereign, with intent to defraud." He was similarly charged with having defrauded Edward L/illeshaw, a tram guard on the City and Suburban Tramway, in the same way, on June 24. Air M'Connel asked for an adjournment for a week, as he 'had com© prepared to defend the withdrawn charge, had -had no notice of the change, ancf had 1 not previously heard of the City and Suburban Tramway charge. Sub-Inspector Black objected on the ground that the evidence was justjhe same as before, but the Bench granted the adjournment. The Sub-Inspector applied for the bad to ■be renewed. Mr M'Conael objected on the grounds that the dharge on which the bail 'had been asied for had been withdrawn, and that tfher-e .was no reason why accused, who lived in Ohristchurch, should be asked: to find new ibajl. The Bench, however, fixed bail at £-50.
