A man was arrested this morning on a charge of attempting to leave the country without making provision for an illegitimate, child.

Among the applicants for the old age pension who appeared before ivlr H. W. Bishop yesterday, was one who claimed to x.aye arrived in this ; colony in the year 1842. This somewhat 'staggered the worthy Magistrate, but on investigating the papers handed .in, he was fully satisfied as to the genuineness of the application, which was granted. Another applicant dated his arrival back to 1851, and deservedly recsived a full award.

.Searchers for frost -fish on the New B.riguton beach have braved the element^ during i~e ear!/ hours of the day for several weeks past, with highly unsatisfactory results. For some reason or other, as yet unexplained, this tasty fish has not bjwn at all in evidence, and the search has ibeen a fruitless one. New Brighton records so far would count on the fingers' of one hand, but the miles travelled by the •searchers have been innumerable, and, doubtless', disheartening.

If every townsman were to adopt the plan of clearing the sidewa'.k in front of his premises early in the morning after a fall of snow, great benefit would result Jo pedestrians. In the few cases where this course was followed during the recent mowstorm, the results were highly satisfactory to everybody. A shipment of 101.701 eighty-pound bags of oats from Lyttelton, Timaru, and Oamaru for South African ports was also despatched by the steamer Magdala, which left Lyttelton on Tues : day.

Jacques, Chairman of the Domain Board, wrote to the Premier, asking that the canopy erected for their Royal Highnesses W>the review^ should 1 be given to the Domain Board. Mr Jacques has received ~a letter in reply from the Premier, stating that the Board can .'have the' canopy, but must ibear the cost of removal and re-erection. |fhe Board will be happy to accept it under these conditions; and' it is intended to re-erect the- canopy at the eastern end of the long lawn. It will probably be known as the Duchess Canopy.

The gymnastic demonstration at the Choral. Hall to-night promises to be well attended, as a 'large number of tickets have been disposed of. Mr Tankard and !his pupils held a very successful rehearsal yesterday. Members from the ladies', girls', men's, youths' and boys' classes will take part to-night, and several novel items are promised. On Tuesday evening, about eight o'clock, a iady had a very narrow escape from a, serious accident, which was averted by the plucky act jof a.'young man. The lady was sitting in a gig at St Albans when the horse suddenly bolted and she lost the reins, which fell down- at the animal's heels. The horse galloped \yQ the Papanui Road with the occupant of the trap calling for help. A number of people endeavoured to stop the runaway without avail. The horse turned into Bligh's Road, and a young man managed to get in over the back of the gig, and getting out on to the shafts^ secured the reins, and 1 soon brought the runaway to a standstill, the' only damage done being to the harness.

The Christchurch employees of the Kaiapoi Woollen Company held their annual "social" in. the Art Gallery on (Thursday last, when, notwithstanding the severe weather, about one hundred and thirty couples were present. A programme of vocal and instrumental items was first given, and the remainder of tie evening was devoted to dancing. Great praise is due to the committee, of whom Mr J. Cleworth was chairman, and Mr E. Round, honorary secretary, for the excellent manner in which the effair was carried out. Messrs Beattie, Desmond, Phillips and Wooliams were efficient M.C.'s, the music was by Pox's Quadrille Band, and 1 the catering by Mr A. B&ttray.
