BOARD OF EDUCATION.

MEETING OF THE BOARD.

A meeting of the North Canterbury; Board of Education) was held at the Normal School this morning ; present^- Mesas T. S. Weston (Chairman), D. M'Millan, J. Ronnie, D.Buddo,* M.8.R., W. Dalziel, T. W. Adams, C. A. C. Hardy* M.H.R.,and H. W. Peryroan.. The Buildings Committee reported that it lad been agreed to purchase up to 1000 loads of soil, at 4d at load, for filling up the School grounds at Addington, the soil to be placed where the Clerk of Works should direct. The St Aibans Borough Council had written, applying for permission to lay pipes through the school ground to connect with- the present open drain, -which would enable the Council to get over the difficulty of draining -the road 1 leading to the main school, a matter standing in the way, of its "declaring the road an open one. The Clerk of Works had eubmitted a. special report, on the matter. It was feared that to carry out the proposal would lead to a nuisance,* as the Board would be unable to prevent the residents front using the drain for house-slops, etc. The report -was adopted. The Appointments Committee reported that the Daxfield and. Le Bon's Bay Committees had each been authorised to secure the services of a part-time teacher, subject to the regulations. The Leeston Committee had forwarded particulars of the attendance. The commitftee resolved that the Board should be glad to help the committee in any. way possible, but that' it could not break the regulation requiring the average attendance to be 91 before; appointing a pupil-teacher. The average attendance at the St Aibans side school having reached 101, the employment, of a pu-pil-teacher was authorised ; -and the'average attendance at Sydenham being mow above the required minimum, the committee recommended the filling of the vacancy for a pupil-teacher. The appointment .of Miss F. Ormandy as pupil-teacher ab Christohurch East was recommended. The appointment of 'Miss E. J. Barrett as part-time teacher at Annat was approved. Mr T. Mitchell, master at As&ton, 'had been granted an additional month's leave of absence, and Miss Buck, of Newlands, until the end of the winteo holidays. In the latter case, as the education of Hie children was suffering, owing to tae continual change of teachers^ the committee reluctantly agreed that any application for further leave could not be entertained- At the request of the Bromley Committee, it had been agreed to advertise for a mistress, but as the mistress at present in. 'charge had been teaching Bince last July, it was considered that she was entitled to the usual three months' notice. The attendance at Darfield being on tihe increase, with a roll number of 55, the committee agreed to appoint Miss Steele, the candidate recommended by- the committee, for six months. The employment of a parttime teacher at Chertsev was authorised, until the average attenwnce should 'warrant the appointment of a> mistress. The attendance at" Fendalton and Carleton be* ing insufficient to entitle those schools to the services of the assistant master and mistress respectively, the ■ committee had resolved that the staffs must be reduced to the number allowed by the scale. The Chairman of the Akaroa High School Board had written, expressing disappointment at the Board's decision mot to admit scholars to the High School until they had passed the Sixth Standard. The report was adopted. Mr Meredith, M.H.R., waited upon the Board in reference to the estabbshmeni of a school in the Ashley Gorge district!.
