THE CANTERBURY REINFORCEMENTS.

The 25 men selected by the War Fund Committee to fill the vacancies in the Canterbury Troop were put through dismounted drill by Lieutenant Mostyn- Jones at 9 o'clock this morning. They will be drilled again this afternoon, aifter which they will receive their uniforms, which 'have been made by the Kaiapoi Woollen Company, and the rest of their equipment. This evening they will be entertained afc a smoke concert at the Caledonian. Rooms. . Already 15 of the 25 'horses have been secured, and it is expected! the remainder will be got before tihe men leave for Wellington tomorrow night.

Trooper Charles Cooper, a native of Cust, having been accepted for active service in South Africa, was entertained by his friettidls on Tuesday evening, at the Cust Hotel.. The menibers of the Cust Corps were •well represented, and during the evening Ijhe guest was presented with a handsome pipe ajnd case by Sergeant Ruddeniklau. The proceedings were not of a lengthened character owing, to the receipt of a , telegram conveying the intelligence that an unple of Mr Cooper had that day met withiMs death through sunstroke.
