The Star. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 1900. THE EXHIBITION.
Christchurch presents an .animated appearance to-day. It is not so crowded as it will be next we<k, but It, is fairly full already. Visitors are arriving from the North Island, from the south, and from "the country districts, and if the influx continues at its present rate, the town will be occupied by a larger number of people than it has ever sheltered in the past. The attendance a\ the opening of the Exhibition to-day confirmed ths most sanguine anticipations of the promoters. Long before the hour of opening the doors the entrances . were thronged, and it seemed but a. few minutes after this signal bad been given that the Agricultural and Industrial Hall was packed by the dense mass of interested spectators. A report of the proceedings appears in another column, and therefore there is no need to. refer tothem at length here But, we may add, they were carefully p Tanned, and cleverly carried out, and that in every way they were worthy of the occasion which they celebrated. Of the Exhibition itself it is early to offer criticism. But the passing glance which the visitors were able to obtain was enough to assure them that the building contains a great deal which will amuse and interest them for the whole of the period -which it I will remain open. The few who have been privileged to make a closer and more exhaustive inspection of the interior have come j away perfectly satisfied regarding the future of the Exhibition. We hope and believe that they are right. Success, we know, is not always at the beck and call of everyone who may desire it, " but if any people deserve to command success the promoters do. Tbev have laboured long and earnestly to produce an exhibition which will be a credit not so much to themselves as 'to Canterbury, and we, at least, think they have succeeded. It remains now for the public to endorse this opinion, and of their doing this we have no doubt.
