THE MIDLAND RAILWAY.
In the course of his reply to the South) Island Railway deputation yesterday the Premier said, with regard to the Midland EaiLway, that both Canterbury and Westland had suffered heavily from its nion- ( completion. If the will of Parliament was to go for anything the completion of this line must' take precedence over all, seeing that Parliament had ordered its completion in 1895, and such being the case, this line must receive {consideration at tbedr hands. He might say, in this connection, that they were at' a very critical juncture, the matter under consideration being the adyisableness of putting a tunnel six miles long Ihrough Arthur's Pass. The total cost would be jomewhat greater than that of the Abt system, and the time for completion of the line might be somewhat extended, but he believed that thia plan would he best for the colony, dependence being placed upon the carriage of minerals rather than en the tourist traffic.
