BANDSMEN'S COLUMN.

(Specially compiled for the " Star.") -

/ (By TOMTOM.). . >,' BAND NOTES. The : Christchurch Garrison intends shoTtly to give another of its enjoyable concerts in the' Drill-shed. Last Monday night tie contest .band was selected from the Woolston. members. With, a capable conductor this baad ought to ninke a fine record. ... The Manawatu Pipe Band has done splendidly since its formation. With "plenty of willing workers and; no lack of enthusiasm, •tho North Island -pipers will soon rival the Southland Pips. Band, ._-..... . • Bamdinaster: Morris -has brought the Te■miika Band: to a very creditable standard. Last Sunday afternoon its programme of choicelmusic played iiifthe Park, was much enjoyed.- A refciatent writes : — " Our band plays very well indeed, and Mr R. Morris, their leader, spa.res nothing to bring them out üblo to play nicely." (Temuka notes will be acceptable.—Tomtom.) -■■■•■ Ib jg reported that on Sunday. Oct. 7 a combined church parade, battalion and ordnanoe, will be held afrSt Mary's Church, Addragtoin.. The Garrison Baad will play new" marches. Lyttelton, Woolston, Kaiapoi, Engineers, R&ngiora, Marino (Lyttelton), Staianore, Ranigiora, Elite, Salvation Army, Papaaiui Temperance, and Christdrarchi Garrison have made such progress that prior to the contest each must be specially 'noted. Timaru Garrison, or to use its new name, "South Canterbury Battalion," is not going to be quite out of tfhe hunt, as Mr Sidney Wolf has again to kern the baiton. Bandsmen will remember him and his fine band which, in 1894. played, " Oberon" and " Schubert." r . . Mr Arthur Heath, of the Elite Band, is a young musician, studious, aspiring, and a most unassuming worker. Twenty-nine was 'he parade strength of the Christchurch Garrison last Sunday morning, under Deputy-bandmaster Tankard. "The Big 4," "The Adjutant," and Mozart's immortal "Gloria" were the selected marches. On the homeward march "Manhattan Beach," "Honeymoon" and the elaborate " I Came, I Saw, I Conquered" were played.. The two chief requirements of the Christchurch Garrison Band are bright and reliable lamps; and now that summer is approaching, big and sensible . hats. Sunday's parade was a credit to the bands of Christchurch. The immense crowd that followed and listened to the inarch and selected music in the Park subscribed upwards of £22 to the Jubilee Contest funds. Stanmore opened with the lboJ test piece, " Beethoven. " Mr Trist Seareli has conducted that particular score before for a far superior band, even eleven years back. To tnose who can remember it. "Beethoven" last Sunday was not entrancing. Mr Pooley chose a pretty selection from Vincent Wallace's " Lurline," which has been played here only once before, in 1864. Mr David Blythe played the cornet solo " Sweet Spirit Hear My Prayer" tastefully. The performance by Bandmaster Pooley's band was decidedly better thaA its "Auber."- Woolston followed. The Elite Band, under Mr Heath, was announcers to play " Elijah." ' It. ought to ; have read Handel's " Hallelujah Chorus." Far some reason "El' Dorado" was sub- ' stituted, and did double duty, as did also " The Belle of New York " by another band. The annual -" social " of the Canterbury Engineers' Bandl was held at Hobbs's Build- j ing on Wednesday night. Upwards of sixtytwo couples were present, and representatives from the several bands attended. Mr Charles Fox provided excellent music, and the members of the band were free to entertain their numerous friends. Bandmaster Pooley, Bandsmen. TV Fox, H. Wilson,' Petrie and Gunner worked well in looking after the large company. '
