CANTERBURY WAR FUND.

A meeting of the Demonstration Committee of the Canterbury War Fund was held at the offices of the Christchurch City Council last night. Mr C. Louisson presided, and there were present Messrs R. C. Bishop C H. Winny, W. E. Samuels, H. B. Sorensen W .Jacques, W. Prudhoe, W. Radcliffe and 0. Archer. An apology for absence w as received from the Mayor of Woolston. The Chairman said that since the last meeting, the contingent had left them, and they might fairly congratulate themselves that matters had passed off very satisfactorily. The accounts, too, were in a very satisfactory state, but one or two contingencies were still pending. The generosity with which they had been treated by local bodies, and by the City Council, had saved them very considerable expense, the City Council saving them £50 in the erection of staging alone. There would in a ll probability be a large cash balance in hand, and speaking personally, the idea of the executive was to return the amount of their con-, tributions to the local bodies in proportion to the amount contributed by each. Letters of thanks had been written to the various bands, to the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, to Mr G. J. G. Smart, to. Mr Russell, to the City Surveyor and staff,! to Bandmaster Merton, Inspector Broham' the Domain Board, Lieutenant-Colonel. Gordon, the Fire Brigades, Mr Gaw-., (traffic manager) and to the contributors of children's flags and sticks. As some £87 had been collected at the gates, it .was certain that 75 per cent of the amounts subscribed by the local bodies would not be required. On the motion pf Mr H. B. Sorensen, seconded by Mr W. Prudhoe, it was decided to return the credit-balance pro rata among the contributing local bodies. Mr R. C. Bishop thought that though all had worked well, the Lyttelton portion of the Demonstration Committee might well be congratulated on the manner in which that part of the matter was carried out which was nothing short of admirable. The Chairman agreed thoroughly with Mr Bishop's remarks. The Mayor of Lyttelton returned thanks on behalf of the Lyttelton Committee. Mr H. B. Sorensen moved, and the Mayor of Lyttelton seconded, votes of thanks to the Chairman, Mr R. C. Bishop and Dr Jennings -who had practically constituted the Executive Committee, and the motion was carried unanimously. On the motion of the Chairman, a hearty vote of thinks was passed to Mr H. Murray, assistant town clerk, for his services. The meeting then terminated. At a meeting of the Executive Committee held subsequently, bonuses were passed to Mr E. J. Righton, the secretary, to the firemen who collected at the Armagh Street gates of the Hagley Park, and to Mr 'Esselborn, tho caretaker of tho Council Cham" bers, who Stei all the labour 0 f preparing the rooms for the many special meetings The Chairman and Mr R, C. Bishop (£! pressed their thorough satisfaction with the manner in which the secretary had carried out his work in connection with the largest ' public gathering Christchurch has yet seen" |
