WELLINGTON NEWS.
■ <? [Per. Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Nov. 20. Influenza, which has been more or less prevalent during the past three weeks, is now becoming virulent. Many cases are reported. Mr Arthur Johnston, the railway expert, who was brought from England eighteen months ago to superintend the installation of the interlocking system, has been obliged to resign, owing to domestic reasons. The Government has cabled to the Agent-General to send out another man. Mr Haselden, S.M., tbis morning expressed the opinion that the time had arrived when a homo for destitute children should be established in Wellington so that they might not be separated from their parents. After negotiations extending over many years the United States Government has at last consented to establishing a parcels "oost exchange with New Zealand. It is hoped to have the system in full working order by Feb. 1 next. The steamer recently built for mail service across Lake Taupo is now completed, and at the beginning of this week will run regularly with passengers and mails. The vessel, on her trial trip, ran from Taupo to Tokaanu, a distance of twenty-eight miles in two hours twenty minutes.
