FIRES.

* At 2 o'clock yesterday morning a fire broke out in a five-roomed house in Madras Street south, owned by Mr F. Errie (who is in Aucklapd), and occupied by Mr Wilson. The house was situated next dewr but one to the house in which the recent fatality occurred. The fire seems to have originated near the kitchen chimney, and was first discovered by a lodger, who awoke with a feeling of suffocation. When he opened the kitchen door he found the whole room ablaze. The two chemical engine's were quickly on the scene, aiid the steamer from Lichfield Street worked . from the Carlisle Street sump. The chemicals held the fire in check, and, the large engine extinguished it. The back part was completely gutted, and the front part damaged. Most of the furniture, which was insured for £50, was' saved. Just before 11 p.m. on Saturday, a fire was discovered on the premises of Mr G. D. Cronin, carriarge builder, in William Street, off the Perry Road.' The engines were promptly on the scene, and the fire was soon got under by the chemical engines, the steamers, which were ready at a sump on tlie Ferry Road, not being required to work. Tho building is a two-story one, and the lower portion is used as a stable for the convenience of customers. The fire appears to have started in a feed box in one of the stalls, and ran up inside the wall to the sit-ting-room above, and, breaking through there, did considerable damage to the furniture in the room. There were no insurances, and the origin of the outbreak is a mystery.
