At the meeting of the Canterbury College Board of Governors yesterday a discussion took place as to the powers of the Board to grant leave of absence to any of its members who might be out of the colony. A motion was tabled to grant' leave of absence for six months to the Revs Canon Harper and Gordon Webster, both of whom are at present in England, when a member of the legal profession present gave it as his opinion that the Board had no power to do so, contending that absence from the colony rendered the seat vacant. The Chairman read from the constitution that the Board had power to grant leave of absence to any member for three months, and this course was finally adopted, but doubt was expressed by another lawyer as to whether, at the expiration of that term, it could be extended for a further three months. The Board deckled to leave the discussion of that point until the necessity for its settlement- arose. i :.At«> ma-sting oi. the Board, of Ccmc__Hati*>n yesterday "-'one -of ' thiß employers' representatives offered tb hetytt&t the competent plumber* hail not for .the past aii; months a^er^ed.^.e-ij^ j^ent-sc^ent*?; iKip^ ,-§i*»^^%_^-if i§p •^etly^rw^^ jha,h.; : yj- '? *' ■ : • W:V .
