The Home team batted first, and lost four wickets for 133 runs. The weather was fine and the -wicket good. The attendance numbered 8000. At the last moment, Roche, the ex-Australian, and Ford Avere chosen to replace Hearne and Maclaren. Kelly, Layer and Iredale stood out. Grace Avon the toss, and, -with Warner, opened tha batting to the bowling 6f Jones and Noble. Grace Avas soon disposed of, being caught loav down afc mid-off by Jones off Noble after making three. One wicket for 14. Townsend followed, only to see Warner's timbers scattered by Jones. Two for 14. Ranjitsinhji partnered Townsend, and hy careful play carried the score to 90, when ToAvnsend played Trumble, who had taken Noble's place, into Howell's hands in the slips. The retiring batsman played an excellent innings, and Avas at the Avickets seventy minutes. Ford joined Ranjitsinhji, and at luncheon three Avickets were doAvn for 108. Ranjitsinhji 60, Ford 1. On resuming, Ford increased his score to 9, and was then clean bowled by Jones. Four for 123. Trott, Avho was at the Avickets forty-five minutes, avus dismissed by an easy catch.
