Montgomery during 'the ses ' sion of Parliament, ; , '■ The Addington School Committe. wrot . asking that' its school should be allowed to compete for the fre« studentship at the School of Art. The Victoria University College wrote acknowledging receipt of the Board's resolution as to holding examinations for exempted students in Nelson, Marlborough and Westland, and stating that the Victoria University would be prepared to hold examinations wherever necessary within its own district. The Registrar said he had received a letter from a student in Wanganui stating that there were several exempted students of Canterbory College who wished to sit for examination in Wanganui, and who would prefer retaining their allegianoe to Canterbury College ahd being examined by its professors to having to join the roll of the Victoria College. Mr Stead said tliat Canterbury College should .complete its present engagements with all students on its books, but should not take up any fresh exempted students outside its own district. The Board went into committee to discuss the question, and upon resuming it was resolved to hold the usual examination at Wanganui this year for exempted students at present on the books of Canterbury College. The matter of further examinations for exempted students this year was referred to the College Committee with power to act. The Board then went into committee to. consider departmental reports, axid upon resuming it waa reported that the following had been adopted : — F rom the joint College and Finance and Estates Committee, recommending that twelve months leave of absence should be granted Mr Bevaa- Brown as from August 31, on a salary at the rate of £550 per annum;, that Mr B. K. S. Lawrence should be appointed acting headmaster, arid that he should be granted a bonus at the rate of £100 for the year, as frpm August 31 j. that Mr F. B. Sykes, 8.A., Cambridge, should be appointed temporarilyto the assistant mastership of the school, the salary to be at the rate of £150 per annum. From the Museum and Library Committee stating that it received a deputation from th-j Master Painters' Association and the Painters' Union respecting starting certain technical classes at the School of Art, and recommending that the wishes of the deputation should be complied with, if practicable ; that a sub-committee consisting of Messrs Scott, Russell and Stead should.be appointed ; to arrange details, and bring up a report; that one representative from the Master' Painters* Association and one from the Painters' Union should be asked to attend the meeting, and tha# Messrs Elliott and .Seager should be requested to attend. The sub-committee recommended that a practical branch of the School of Art should be set up for painting, decorating and sign writing, etc. , that the salary for a practical assistant for the class should be at the rate of £6 per term, for two hours per week; that the head-master of the School of Art, Mr Seager and a member each from the Union and . Master Painters' Association should arrange a syllabus. The Board again went into committee to I consider the report of the Finance and Estates Committe and upon resuming rose.
