LONDON, June 15.7 Worrall and Darling were the first batsmen for Australia, Mead ahd Jessop. bowl-, ing. Before he had scored Darling gave Hayward a chance in the slips, which was declined. Rhodes displaced Meades at; 27, and the change was successful. Worrall, who showed good style, was nicely taikeriby Hayward in the slips. The first wicketfell for 27 and the second for 28. Jessop , displaced Mead with the ball- at 44. Jackson,' Rhodes and Mead also were tried: before 80 appeared. At 97 Jackson v and ■ Townsend were tried. Rhodes replaced Jackson at 123, both giving way' lo Ranjitsinhji and Mead four runs later. Jessop displaced Mead at 138, and Haywird and Rhodes took the ball at 146. These rapid changes had no effect on the batsmen. Hill gave a chance of stumping when he had scored a single. He stepped out to . drive, but missed, and Lilley , failed' W take the ball. Noble began quietly. When .he was afc 19 he survived a confident appeal . for leg-before. The fielding of the English team was excellent, and many runs were, saved.
