\ The monthly meeting of .the 'commiitea of the Canterbury Chamber of Commercß was held yesterday afternoon, .when, in. the. absence = of the president, Mr JE. W- Eoper was voted to the chair. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs I. Gibbs, JE. C. Brown, H. Quane, H. G. Simms.and W. Reeee. Correspondence was read : —

From the Dunedin Chamber, with reference jtor trada m South Africa, stating that they had addressed the Premier and Messrs. F. !W. and P. Hudson on the subject. The letter was received. From the- Department of Commerce and Industries, Wellington, on the same subject. A sub-committee was apppinbed to take steps in the matter. Fromn the Dunedin Chamber,, stating that Mr Barr would be pleased to represent the Canterbury Chamber at the Philadelphian Commercial Congress. From the' Wellington Chamber of Commerce, deciding to address the Government in support of the proposals of the Canterbury Chamber, in the matter of the detention of steamers at the Bluff. From the Invercargill Chamber on the same subject, jforwarding copies of letters to the General IMamoger of the Union Steamship" Comipany, and to the Postmaster-General and jthe District Railway Traffic Manager, In:vercargill, to be sent conjointly by the Can-. Jterßirry, Dunedin and Invercargill" Chamliters-. The Chairman was authorised to (sign the letters on bebalf of the Chamber. )From the Napier and Gisborne Chambers, (regarding the port of call of the 'Frisco jmaiT, advocating Attckland. From the jDimetiin Chamber,-, stating that in the ! event of a fortnightly service being estabm'sfied, Auckland and' Wellington s&ould be 'made alternate ports of arrival and departure. The Auckland Chamber, in a i lengthy letter, advocated the claims of it? j port. From the Mirrlborough Land and ißnilway League, forwarding detailed infor- ! matioh* concerning tfre cost and Toirte of the I proposed Blenheim-Christchurch railway. lit was decided to acknowledge the letter, iand to state that the matter would, receive '■ the careful consideration of the Chamber. ■The question of the suppression of smuggling was referred" to, and the following resolution was carried — "The Cbmmittee of this Chamber -wishes to record its appreciation of the efforts. of the CoHbctor of Customs and his officers in suppressing smuggling and illicit distillationt.'* After tlxVtransaction of routine business, the meeting closed.
