♦ 'SEIS DAY. A' meeting, of the Noßtk Canterbury Ifcbard of Education was lield this morning; present — Messrs J. Bev. nie (chairman), H. VV. Peryman, T. W. Adams, M. Dalziel, D. Buado„ J. Munnings- 0. A. C. Hardy, T. S.- Weston and A. Saunders. The Buildings Committee reported that the-. Lincjln Committee had wnfrten asking fur a grant towards the cost of fencing off the _wi_a_i_iT_j Lath. It had. been resolved that the Board regretted that it could not see its way to assist, it Jiaving been, also pointed ont that the circumstances undeir-which the Addington Committee bad received a small grant for lencing were entirely different,, and that no assistance, beyond leave to.- use the incidental fund, had been given .to the West Melton Committee. Consideration of a letter from Leeston, understood.to.be a request to be allowed to thes inoidanital fund for paying the 'ices of pupils attending the cookeiy and manual training classes, liad been held over, pending the Board's decision on a similar application in connection with the Christchurch, School of Domestic Instruction. The Normal School Committee- reported' that it had been decided ' to recommend the appointment of Airs E".' Fr Wilson; at present mistress at Greendale. as mistress at the Model School. The Principal bad T submitted an exhaustive report on the state of preparedness of thfe - pupil-'teaclter* entering the Normal ; School; . from- which it appeared that the majority of those entering the Normal Sehbol ' had* been well prepared in their pupil-'teach'err course, showing, indeed, that- in most" cases- ttie masters under whose charge they had beenhad devoted a Teat-deal more-tiirie-to-thei'r-instruction than required by- the regul'sutions. After some discussion; if had 1 been agreed 1 to advise the- Board- to make Latin a compulsory subject for pupil-teachers, on easier lines than the present course. The tender of Messrs White and' Co. for- the supply of fuel during winter had' been-? accepted. ' In reply to a letteiv asking- for information on the subject of the use of the gymnasium, it had been resolved to adhere i to a former decision, that the use of the ji gymnasium could not be allowed for purposes not oonnected with the Normal Sehool. ! Mr Adams moved the adoption of the __. \ ■ report. J Mr Dalziel seconded' the' motion. - Mr Peryman moved' that that clause referring to the appointment of a mistress at the Model School should be referred back to die committee for re-considterettion. Mr Buddo seconded the amendment, which was carried by sis. to three. With the exeeption of tbat clause the report- was adopted. Mr Buddo moved, pursuant to notice—"That the Board's banking account be placed at the Bank of New. Zealand, md that the school committees be informed, by circular that the Bank of New Zealand! will keep school committees'' accounts frw of book-keeping charge.** Mr Hardy seconded the motion. Mr Weston suggested that before any action was taken, the question should be' ■ referred "to a committee. Mr Dalziel supported the motion. Mr Adams agreed with Mr Weston that the question should be considered, by a cornMr Buddo said the question had already been under consideration for some time, and had been reported on by a committee. The motion was carried by 5 to 4. Letters on the subject of teachers' appointments from Christchurch East, St Albans and Russell's Plat Committees, and from the Opawa Committee expressing the opinion that the Board should provide more scholarships, were referred to the Appointments Committee. In the case of Flemington, where a committee had not been elected, it was decided to hold a fresh election, and the same course was adopted in regard to Medbury. Mr K. M'Lennan wrote asking permission for his son to compete for a senior scholarship. Previous to his entry into the Dimedin High School, the boy had fulfilled all the conditions by attendance at an Otago primary school. It was decided to grant the permission asked, the present regulations having been framed to meet such cases. In reply to the Board's request for nominations in cases where the sohool committee elections had been incomplete, the Aylesbury Committee recommended the appoint-ni-h. of Mr James O'Malley ; tlie Glentunnel Committee, of Messrs J. Affleck, C. Marsh and H. Smith ; and the Willowby Committee of Mr H. Fi-ampton. These appointments were confirmed. Protests against the validity of the elec-. tions at Longbeach, Loburn North and Marshland were considered 1 , but in each case the election was confirmed. The Ashburton, Hampstecd and Tinwald Committees recommended the appointment of Mr E. Williams as truant officer for the district, and the appointment was confirmed. A letter from the Children's Aid Society expressing the hope that the Board would sonsider the advisability of raising the age as well as the standard at which children were exempt from the operations pf tlie School Attendance Act, was referred to the Appointments Committee. The Board went into committee, and, on resuming, rose.
