SPARK ARRESTER.

Mr J. Shepherd, of Southland, ias recently patentedya spark-arrester, a trial of which .was -held at Messrs Andersbn'p foua- i dry last evening. It Was attached-] to the ' smoke-box of a traction engine, "which, was fed Avith wood and shavings, to produce sparks. The device acted perfectly, ; not a.* single spark escaping from the funnel! The • ] arrester consists of a small turbine wheel, < which fills the centre of the smoke stack, and is driven by the exhaust steam.; The \i shaft extends on either side of the smoke- ' box, and fans of the propeller-blade pattern j are attached to it, so that, as the turbine : revolves, they beat the air. The turbine I i revolves from 2000 to 3000 times a minute, '. '■ and thus completely grinds all the • sparks ' to dust, the exhaust steam assisting in the • : process. The device aliso raises a perfect ] ! draught, and the inventor claims tliat it ' saves fully 15 per cent of coal.
