Dr Jennings had contributed six shrubs and Dr Levinge had effered several others. He had? sent fifty packets of sweet peas to the East and West Christchurch. Schools. Gifts of bulbe and irises had also been 1 received, and the former planted along the 'river-banks. He had written to the Bishop and Canon Knowles with regard to having the fence repaired, but without success, and it would bow be necessary to obtain stakes and barbed wire, to protect the trees from dogs. On the motion of Mr Oarrick, seconded by Dr Levinge, Mr Barker was added to the Planting Committee, and Mr Cockayne was appointed to superintend the planting. Mr Carrick reported that at jfc meeting of delegates from the Christ- , church City Council, the Sydenham ', Borough Council and the Beautifying As- , sociation, held on May 14, it had baen re- : solved to plant the South; Belt. An avenue '< of- trees was to be planted down the middle «f the South Belt from Colombo. Street *> ] tiie Lincoln Road, and from the Gas Works 1 Road to the East Belt, the intervening < space to be planted on the footpaths. Plane trees were to be used. The Beautify- ( ing Association was prepared to contribute £30 or £40 towards the- scheme, the completion of which was roughliy estimated to cost £100. The City Council was willing to contribute, but the Sydenham Borough Council was not. Mr Humphreys said that he thought they would be doing wrong to plant the trees in the middle of the road, as tfie view would be blocked, and two nar- , row ways substituted for one wide road. Alter discussion Mr Carrick moved that if ' should be a recommendation from the Soeiety that the South Belt should be planted on the Christchurcb side from Durham Street to the East Belt, on the footpath, with plane trees, the trees to be planted within 18in of the kerbing. Dr Levinge seconded the motion, which was carried. The matter of having the trees planted and attended to was left in the hands of Messrs Cockayne and Archer. . The question of beautifying the waste triangular piece of land between Gloucester Street and the Christchurch Working Men's Club next came under consideration, and it was decided, on the motion of Mr Carrick, seconded by Mr Humphreys, that the ground should be fenced and planted.
