CITY COUNCIL.

An ordinary meeting of the Christclrarch City Council was held last night ; present The Mayor and Councillors Gray, Appleby, Hamilton, Morris, Stapleton, Kincaid, Sorensen, Prudhoe, . Payling, Smith, An Idrews and Woods. Apologies were received for the absence, through indisposition, of Councillors Sandstein and Samuels. The following items of finance were reported:—Debit balance £9591 4s lid; receipts since the previous meeting— General account £402 9s Bd, cemetery account £14, suspense account £125 13s Bd. loan account £4 Bs, interest account £82 9s I'Ocl. Expenditure—On general account £541 Bs, loan account £90 13s sd, cemetery account £52 17s, suspense account £15, interest account £7 11s. ffotal rate for the year £11,229 Bs, collected to date £10,978 7s 4d, amount outstanding £251 0s Bd. On the reading of the estimates, Council- : lor Morris moved that the amount of £12. 83 6d, paid by Councillor Kincaid on account of the visit to the reserves, should be refunded to that Councillor. Councillor Payling seconded the motion, which was carried. The financial statement was then passed. I Correspondence was read : — From the Dej partment of Agriculture, stating that the Dairy Industry Act of 1898 would shortly be brought into operation, when the public milk supply would be inspected by the Government veterinarians, and asldng for the views of the Council upon the subject. The fiction of the Government was approved. From Mr Fail, offering to give £25 a year for five years towards a central fish market. The letter was referred to the Sanitary Committee. From Mi' D. Lumsden, suggesting that more Seats should be erected near the Godley Statue. The letter was Tef erred: to the Works Committee. Councillor Gray then moved that the Mayor should be authorised to complete the purchase of the section at tlie 'corner of Madras and Lichfield Streets for a fire brigade station, as previously resolved by the Council. Councillor Woods seconded the motion, which was carried, Councillors Kincaid and Stepleton dissenting. Councillor Gray laid upon the table a sketch plan of the new fire brigade lmildinu, and moved that tenders should be called for the work. The Mayor . said that Councillors should have an opportunity of examining the plans, as he did not think a Councillor should be asked to vote for plans which he had not considered. Councillor Smith said that working plans and specifications should be laid upon the Council table by next meeting, and moved in that direction, with the addition that the plans should be in the Town Clerk's office at least one week before the Council was asked to adjudicate' on them: Councillor Hamilton seconded the amendment, which was carried. . It .was resolved that the "Lyttelton Times " should be tho official paper for the year 1899. The Council then rose.
