The lighthouse on Armish Rock, in th. Hebrides, is about 500 ft from the ghotc. To avoid having an attendant on the rock the light is produced on the shore, and projected across the water upon a mirror m the lighthouse, the minor retiectin-r the light in the desired direction. .^ A snake show is in progress in New York. Over one thousand varieties are en exhibition. The ordinary garter snakes and milk snakes that can be iound in auy cow pasture are placed beside Gila monsters, and boas and pytuons from ths: jungles of India and Alrica, scorpions, tarantulas, centipedes, lizards, chameleons, salamanders, and every variety of crawling and creeping tiling can ba seen amid attractive surroundings, ' and their beauties iire pointed out uy i._e_atteiitlauts. llie show was suggested and organised by Alton S. Williams, a wen-known newspaper man of New York, both to gratify I*a1 * a popular craze for novelties' aiw tor scientific investigation. He is an enthusiastic student oi naiui-.il history, and his tasto runs to snakes, whicli, he declares, have lieen unjustly maligned. He regards them as innocent oojects of interest, poi-sosing beauty as wcil as wisdom.
