. Some interesting evidence was given in tli Magistrate's Court at Wellington on Tues day during the hearing of a. judgment sum n?ons case, A. W. Stevens v. Chow Yen According to the "Post" this was a cas in which plaintiff was run over in the stree by a Chinaman, and,. though lie first sue< the wrong man, he got the right one after wards, and secured judgment against him fo: daniages. A few days after the judgmen was recorded,' Yen, it was alleged, mortgage* what little property he had. Private detec tives, who had been engaged in the case deposed to having seen ''Chow Yen in Chine* gambling dens dozens of times. He pui monsy on the table and picked up money, The men played with counters, and pui money — pounds at a time — on the table. As recently as Wednesday evening last the witnesses were in one of these dens in Haining Street, and saw Yen put 2s 6d on the table, and subsequently ss, crying out " Five bob." The judgment debtor was present in Court, and was represented by Mr Young, who said that as there was no interpreter he could not call his client. Counsel, however, submitted that ability to pay had not been proved. Mr* Kenny, S.M.,*said that if a man went and gambled after a judgment; was given against him it was evidence that he had money to spend. An order was accordingly made for immediate payment, in default sixteen days' imprisonment.'
