SUICIDE OF A CHINAMAN.
Yot Lee, the proprietor of an apparently thriving Chinese laundry in Madras Street, close to its junction with Tuam Street, was found hanging from a low beam in his house at 9.30 this (morning, and had evidently been dead for some time. Inquiries elicited the fact that deceased had last been seen alive on Monday evening by a man and woman who are both resident in the locality. The woman referred to states that she knocked at his door early on Tuesday moining, and this morning, without receiving an answer. At about 9.30 this morning a fellow Chinaman, named Gee Wong, who|kiuls from Dunedin, after vainly knocking for some time, peered in at the window, and saw Yot Lee's body suspended from a beam with a piece of clothes-lime, and an overturned box, on which it is presumed deceased must have stood, lying near. Gee Wong at once ran and gave information" to the police. Yot Lee, who was a married man, some thirty-six years of age, had a wife and son in China, and a cousin in Christchurch. He had been a resident of Christchurch for about two years. Neighbours had observed that Yot Lee's manner had been strange of late, and attributed the change to some illness. An inquest will be held at the Caversham Hotel at 4.30 this afternoon. The deceased left a will in favour of his cousin, who is in business in Victoria Street, and the, sum of £7 10s to defray liis funeral expenses. A long statement written in Chinese, which, is supposed to have reference to the reasons for his act, was found near the body, and. a translation of this will probably be forthcoming at the }i quest.
