A CALLOUS ASSASSIN.
MOURNING IN AUSTRIA. United Press Association— By Electrio Telegraph— Copyright. BERNE, Sept. 12. The Empress of Austria waa attended by the Countess Szapany, and was returning to Caux. Luccheni, the assassin, was hiding behind a tree. He sprang out and stabbed ' the lady with an extremely sharp file, the wound, which was over three inches deep, piercing the heart and the left lung. The Empress, feeling the shock, but no pain, thought that she had been struck with a view to stealing her watch. When she sank to the ground, she remarked, "I think I feel a pin in my chest." She was assisted aboard the steamer. When she fainted the Countess Szapany opened the Empress's bodice, and discovered a small wound, almost imperceptible, and marked by two drops of blood. The Empress, momentarily recovering, asked j what had happened, but never spoke afterwards. She was attended by two physicians
and priests. The body, which has been embalmed, is lying in a coflin and dressed in white. It will be removed to Vienna on Wednesday. Lucch eni states that he has been an Anarchist since the age of thirteen. He went to Geneva to assassinate the Duke of Orleans. Failing to find him, he determined to" kill the Empress, whom he recognised. The man exhibits revolting stoicism. He declares that lie had no accomplices. The jolice arrested ten of his associates at LauI sanne. VIENNA, Sept. 12. The Emperor is bearing the shock with heroic fortitude. Intense grief is manifested throughout Austria and Hungary, .men and women weeping in the streets. Mourning' banners are displayed everywhere. The display of great sympathy with the Emperor over the occurrence will probably facilitate the settlement of the difficulty with Hungary over the Ausgleich. All the European Rulers have sent messages of condolence. Queen Victoria, expressed consternation and sorrow. The Pope is painfully affected.
Grief throughout Italy is poignant, owing to three similar crimes having been committed by Italians. tt
