Mr Ellis Wood wAs a passenger for the south by express this morning. An auction Bale of choice fruit will be held by Messrs Ayers, Beauchamp and Co. to-morrow, at their rooms. Mr C. Louisson, Mayor of Christchurch, is arranging to give a children's ball in the City Council Chambers during the first weok in September. The Defence Commission will begin its Christchurch sittings on August 9. It is expected that H.M.S. Tauranga will be in Lyttelton on or about that date, and that Captain Brown will take part in the deliberations. The matron of the Christclvurch Hospital wisheß to acknowledge with thanks the following contributions to the comfort of the patients : — Books and periodicals, Mesdameß Rennall, Gammuck, Waymouth and Mr W. R. Common. Flowers, Miss MurrayAynsley and Miss Beech er. Any contributions of old linen will be thankfully received. Another old Canterbury pioneer has passed away in the person of Mr Thoma3 Ingleson, who die<l at his residence, George Street, Christchurch, early on Saturday morning. Mr Ingleson came out to Canterbury in the ship " Mary Ann "about forty-five years ago, and took up the business of a cabinet maker in Christchurch, which occupation ho followed until his death. The deceased leaves a large circle of friends to mourn their loss. A hand of young hoodlums who were sitting in one of the back seats of the Opera House during the performance of "The j Elijah" yesterday afternoon, behaved in .a very unseemly manner. N r ot content with calling in the aid of heavy sticks and boots to convey their appreciation of several of the items, they indulged in vocal eccentricities which would have been out of place even at a circus.
