'liiere was a high tide on" Sunday morning about two o'clock, and the sea broke in -through a gap about thirty feet wide, immediately east of the central battery, flooding the low-lying sections in the immediate neighbourhood to the extent, perhaps, of half the bulk of the last inroad. The Public Works Department was erecting a plank barricade across the gap, and the work had been finished excepting some thirty feet.
