LOCAL AND GENERAL.
In the civil action, T. G. Russell v. P. Cross, heard in the Magistrate^ Court on Thursday, and reported as being adjourned till July 7, the matter was settled out of Court. Mr Russell Halley, the well-known ama- 1 teur vocalist, has left the establishment of Messrs Sargood, Son and Ewen, with which he has been connected for seventeen years, and has joined that of Messrs Bing, Harris and Co. At the Conciliation Board this morning, Mr James Chalmers, who has been one of the Union representatives since the inception of the Board, announced that he would be compelled to resign his position shortly, but would not do so until the cases which had already been referred to the Board had been dealt with. A meeting was held in . the Woodend Mechanics' Institute on Saturday night to form a Morris-tube club. There was a good attendance. ' It was decided to form a club, and the following were elected a committee : — Messrp J. Ballinger.B. Archer, S. Smith, A. Burbery and Alex Judson, hon secretary and treasurer. Shooting will take place every Saturday night, in the Oddfellows' Hall, and it was decided to give 6s for the first "possible " made by a member. At the Conciliation Board this morning, a communication was received from the Canterbury Builders' Association, to the effect that, Upon further consideration, it had decided not to press the cases on the Board against Messrs Wardell Bros., Messrs Nelson Bros., the Belfast Freezing Company and Armstrong, and permission. was given to withdraw the cases. The refer- ! ence was to bring these firms under the same conditions as the Builders and Contractors' Association when employing carpenters. The ladies' bracelets in connection with the Grand National Meeting have just been made by Messrp B. Petersen and Co., jewellers, and are now being exhibited in their windowv The first prize bracelet is a square gold band, "with knife wire scroll between, on which is mounted in coronet settings one large and beautiful diamond, with two smaller diamonds and two emeralds, the whole making a very -hand-, some trophy. The second prize is a double fancy scroll wire bracelet of a new design, on which is, set, in coronet setting, one diamond and one ruby. The first prize Hunt Club -Race bracelet is a square gold band with two scrolls entwined round the centre stone/ which is a large sapphire, and on 'either side there is a large diamond, the stones being set in coronet settings on a •knife, wire scroll. Altogether, the bracelets, are- fine specimens of jewellers' handicVuft, and reflect great credit on the firm for" r excellent workmanship.
