Auction Sale. — At 1 p.m. to-morrow Messrs Ayers, Beanchamp and Co. will hold an auction sale of furniture, &0., on prejnises in Durham Street north. The Volunteers.— The train which . is. to take the South Canterbury volunteers home on Easter Monday after the encampment vill leave Christchurch at 7.30 p.m. Ram Paib.— There was an entry of about 460 rams at Mr W. Buss's annual fair at the Central Yards, Kangiora, today, all the well-known breeders being represented. Half-mast High. — Flags were hoiated half-mast high at a few offices in town today as a tribute to the memory of the late Mr E. J, Parker, managing director of the Huddart Parker Company, who died suddenly in Melbourne yesterday afternoon. | Thb Public Morgue. — A petition to the City Council praying that the public morgue may not be erected in the yard at the back of the Chester Street fire brigade station is in course of preparation for signature by the residents of the neighbourhood. Angling. — Mr W. A. Prentice, fishing the Ashley river below the Gorge bridge, caught on one day six trout of an aggregate weight of 28. Jib, the smallest fish being 4}lb, all in splendid condition. On another day he got four, weighing altogether 17£lb. All were taken with the whitebait phantom. Thb Police. — Sergeant M'Leod and Constables Field and O'Halloran, of Christchurch, who, with three Wellington constables, have been on duty at the Dunedin Jubilee Exhibition, returned to Christchurch last night. '■■'„ 1 Supreme Court. — His Honor Mr Justice Denniaton held sittings in Chambers and in Bankruptcy this morning, and disposed of a number of applications. His Honor will hold a sitting in Banco at 11 a.m. tomorrow, when a motion by Mr Stringer for a writ of prohibition in the case of Finlay v. Bishop and another will be heard. A Garrison Band. — A meeting of volunteer.officers and others likely to be interested in the question of the formation of a Garrison Band, will be held at the Garrison Library at'B p.m. to-morrow, to discuss,, means for raising the funds necessary in connection with the organisation of the band and other details. An outlay of ,£2OO will be required to provide instruments, which, it is proposed, shall remain the property of the Garrison. Valedictory.— About' thirty-five of the friends of Mr D. M'Kay and Mr James Taylor, of Bangiora, met at the Junction Hotel last evening to bid them good-bye on their departure by the lonic on a visit to the Old Country. The gathering was in the form of a " smoke " concert, and Mr A. Y. Hay wa3 voted to the chair. The healths of the guests were honoured, and hearty good wishes for a pleasant voyage and safe return to the colony were expressed, A handsome Eaiapoi rug was also presented to the wife of each. A number of other toasts were honoured, and the evening passed very pleasantly. A Historic Building.— The twostoreyed building next to Messrs Kaye, and Cartels offices, on the east side of Cathedral Square, and now in process of removal, is interesting on account of its connection with the' early .history of music in Christchurch. It was the first musichall built in the city, and was erected in 1863 by the late Mr Charles Bonnington, the tipper floor being intended a 9 a concert room and the lower as a music shop. Excellent amateur concerts were held there under Mr and Mrs J. E. Fitzgerald, and were conducted by the late Mr J. Bilton. The first General Synod of the Anglican Church held its meetings there under the presidency of Biah'op Selwyn. • ConiiTßTf at District School. — The annual school treat was held last Thursday., .•'.: when about one hundred and fifty persons . were present jlwring the afternobn. In the evening further amußement, in the form of music, singing and games, was provided, Misses Paterson and Hutchison and Messrs Belgrave, Hutchison and Drammond, together with a number of ladies connected with -the school, asaisting. A prize was presented T>y the teacher to Maggie Fentz for making the most progress in reading during the year. The Chairman of the School Committee also presented a prize for the best attendance, which was won by Ellen Finley with the poasible. Altogether, the treat, which was managed entirely by the ladies, was most successful. Personal.— The Eev ' F. S. Prior returned to Nelson by the Manapouri last evening. Mr Mackay, of the Labour Department, returned to Wellington yesterday. The Rev I. Zachariah went north yesterday. Coursing. — The Ashburton Coursinw ' Club has elected Mr H. Milner, judge, and Mr M. Healey, slipper. The selection of the ground has been left over till Thursday. The second payment will be due on Thursday evening at nine o'clock. * Football. — Entries for the Senior and Junior and President s Cap competitions of the Canterbury Rugby Union, will close with the Secretary to-morrow. The annual meeting of the Referees Association will be held at the Clarendon Hotel at ei»ht ' o'clock on Friday evening. Musical" Union. — An excellent rehearsal waß held on Monday evening for orchestra and soloists, in connection with the first concert of the season, when Alfred Hill's cantata, Hinemoa, will be produced, the solo 3 being taken by Mra Burns, representing Hinemoa, Mr Maitland Gardner, Tutanekai, Mr P. Hockley, Tiki, and Mr Sydney Hawker, Tohunga. In addition to the cantata the following will be played by the orchestra: — Overture from "Buy Bias," by Mendelssohn; two movements from Mozart's concerto in A, for clarionet and orchestra; and the Turkish march from Beethoven's " Ruins' of Athens," all new productions. Miss Alice Gray and Mr Sydney Bell will also contribute songs. A further addition to the list of supporters has been made by the names of twenty-five new subscribers. Australian Mail.— The Waikare, from Melbourne and Hobart, arrived at the Bluff yesterday afternoon. Women's Social akd Political League. —The usual fortnightly meeting of the Women's Social and Political League was held last evening in the Art Gallery. The officers for the ensuing year were nominated, and will be elected at the meeting of the League to be held on Monday next. The other business was of a routine character. Wauchop Memorial Fund.— A largelyattended meeting of swimmers was held at the Clarendon Hotel last. night in connection with the Wauchop Memorial. Mr A. Francis presided, and apologies were received from the following gentlemen, who expressed their sympathy with the movement : — Messrs G. Harris, F. W. Johnston, K. Bassett, C. Taylor, W.
