Of every 1000 inhabitants of the globe 558 live in Asia, 242 in Europe, 111 in Africa, eighty-two in America, five in Oceana and the Polar regions, and only two , in Australia. Asia contains more than one-half of the total population of the earth I and Europe nearly one-fourth.
