_» TO-DAY'S PROCEEDINGS. [Per Press Association.! DUNEDIN, March 23. < The weather is perfect. From early morning the streets were full of people wending their way to witness various functions. • It is estimated that Dunedin never before held so many people. Considering the great strain on its resources, the railway department well overtook the work of the week. Fully 3000 arrived last night. The proceedings to-day opened ° with religious services, the Knox and First Churches forming the central points. At the former the Governor attended, the preachers being the Revs Saunders and Hewitson. At the Synod's special services t at First Church there were immense congregations, and special sermons were t preached by the Revs Gibb and Chisholm. At St Joseph's, Father O'Neil, of Milton, * was the preacher ; at the Trinity Wesleyan, the Revs North and Jolly. At the Synagogue there was a full choral service, with special prayers. At the Cathedral Bishop Nevill was the preacher. Fully 300 persons have come from Ivercargill, 400 from Outram, 400 from Palmerston, 900 from Clinton and 600 from Oamaru, all by special trains, while the ordinary trains brought quite another 100 °- _* „ Perfect weather is being enjoyed for the ■ jubilee celebration. The procession was a great success. Trades of all kinds were represented, the competitive displays being of a high order of excellence. The features of the procession, which took forty minutes to pass a given point, were the gatherings of Maoris" and old identities. His Excellency the Governor, Lady Ranfurly, the n Premier and the Minister of Lands took s part, and were loudly cheered as they a proceeded through the streets.
