A Question of Status. — During a discussion at the meeting of the Charitable Aid Board to-day, Mr Acton-Adams pointed out that the Samaritan Home Committee had no legal existence as a public body, but enjoyed exactly the same status as a private individual. Doubtless those who managed that institution were well-disposed and energetic people, but it was well to remember that the Home as a corporate body had no existence in law. Memorial to the Lati. T. Art Competition.— The Att Society invited competition for a design for the cover of the catalogue for its present exhibition. ■'• A -'prize' •._•;;_&•* 2s was offered by MrR. D. Thomas to the successful competitor. Nineteen designs were sent in, and that of Mr E. Bartley, draughtsman and designer for the Lyteltton Times Company, was awarded the prize. A design sent in by Mr Edward Hill -was highly commended. Liberty League. — A well-attended meeting of the Council of this League was held iv the League's rooms last night. Satisfactory reports were received from the suburban delegates, and several new members were enrolled. An excellent paper on " The Influence of the Press on Modern Thought," was read by a lady councillor. After a full discussion, the meeting terminated with a very hearty vote of thanks to the authoress. Funeral.— The funeral of the wellknown swimmer, Mr T. S. Wauchop, took place yesterday afternoon at the Linwood Cemetery, and was largely attended. The open bier was covered with a profusion of white floral wreaths and crosses, sent by numerous friends and sympathisers. All the swimming clubs in Christchurch and suburbs, as well as those of Lyttelton, Riccarton and Yaldhurst, were represented by their leading office-bearers. About sixty members of the East Christchurch Amateur Swimming club, of which the deceased was captain at the time of his death, followed the mourning carriage. , The staff and employes of Messrs Kempthorne, Prosser and Co , at whose establishment the late Mr Wauchop had been employed, were strongly represented, Mid when the cortege arrived at the cemetery fully four hundred people were present. The pall - bearers were Messrs Trnscott, Sinclair, Taylor, Ormandy, Armitage, Kent, Stewart, Sibbald, Mazey, Smart, Franks and Stokes, representatives of various swimming clubs. The Rev H. C. M. Watson read the burial service of the Church of England at tlie «rave, where a large number of ladies had gathered. A special memorial service will be held at St John's Church next Sunday afternoon at half -past three. The members of the various swimming clubs and of the Association are invited to attend.

Monday's GALE.-The nor'-wester on Monday blew with extreme force in the Horprata district. Turnips, which had in most cases been sown at least twice, and were now coming away fairly well, were blown clean away. Not a b traw s &ek was left standing, but thatched stacks of grain escaped without much injury. Several ohiinneys* were blown down, and other damage was done. Mr Percy, of the Road Board staff, was driving a load of 6 x 4 timber for the repair of the Selwyn Bridge, when, turning a corner the full force of the wind caught him, he was blown off the dray, one of the timbers lifted by the wind struck him on the head, cutting him badly above the eye, and another fell upon him as he lay on the ground, breaking two of his ribs. By the fall itself he badly injured one of his shoulders. The gale was one of the worst that has been experienced in the district. It was followed by a heavy rain of brief duration. Theatre RoVal.— Mr Frank Thornton and his clever Cdmedy Company, who have just terminated a _ndst successful engagement in Dunedin, will commence a twelve nights' season at the Theatre Royal on Friday night. It is many years since Mr Thornton made tie first hit in this city with The Private Secretary, and since then his visits have alwayß been looked forward to with keen . anticipation.
