A MAN OVERBOARD.

During the voyage of the Union Steamship Company's Corinna from Wellington to Lyttelton yesterday, a wharf labourer named William John Gilpin jumped over- j board at about 11 a.m., when the vessel was abreast of Kaikoura. The engines were promptly reversed and a boat lowered. The man was picked up in the short time of eight minutes, but upon being brought to the steamer he was found to be quite dead, prolonged attempts at resuscitation proving fruitless. The body was conveyed to the Lyttelton morgue, and an inquest will be held.
