MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.
At a meeting of the executive of the Society for Social Ethics, held Feb. 28, the following resolutions were passed: — (1) That this Society heartily approves of Dr Irvixtg's action in recommending the general use of cremation, instead of the present system of earth burial, and that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to him. (2) That this Society desires to express its. sense of the great loss to the world, and. more particularly to the Women's Christien Temperance Union, occasioned by the death of their fearless and efficient leader, Frances E. Willard. In response to a letter received from the National Council of the Women of New Zealand, inviting the Society to affiliation and representation at the coming Council to be held in Wellington on April 20, it was resolved to accept the invitation, and Mrs Mary H. Plunkett was appointed delegate.
Women's Christian Temperance Union. — An "At Home/ and evening soiree and entertainment in connection • with, the Leeaton branch of this organisation were held in the Leeston Town Hall on Thursday afternoon and evening, when the hall was well filled on both occasions. The anmial report was presented and adopted, and showed the "Union to be steadily on the increase numerically and financially. J-ne Rev "W. Grant presided, and gave an address on the aims of the Union. Tea and light refreshments were served daring ttl 6 afternoon, and several songs, musical selections and recitations were given. At the evening celebration addresses were given ?y the Revs W. Grant, C. Griffen and A. C. ~^ r y».
