HE KNEW WHAT A PINE-APPLE WAS.
Afc an old-fashioned hostelry two gentlemen were dining, when a dispute arose aa to what a pine-apple was. One of the diners insisted that it was a fruit. The other, with equal confidence, gave it as his opinion that a pine-apple was a vegetable. A wager waß at once made, and the friends determined to acoepfc the decision of the waiter, who was called to tho table. "John," asked one 6f them, "how do yoti describe al pineapple ? Is it a fruit, of ia it a vegetable ?" , The waiter rubbed his hands, pieced his head on one .side, and, with a pitying smile, replied : " If s neither, gentlemen; a pme-apple ia always a hextra !"
