THE MEDICAL CONGRESS.
LUNACY REFORM. PPeb Pbeso Association.! WELLINGTON, March 18. A paper was read at the Medical Congress by Dr Collins, on lunacy reform, advocating the separation of curable from incurable patients, and an observation ward in hospitals where examinations could be conducted instead of at police stations. It was resolved to urge these reforms on (the Government, and a deputation waited on the Premier at once. Mr Seddon agreed in the main wittt the suggestions, but said that it was a question of money, though it would be well spent. He blamed the doctors for the loose way in which they sent people to asylums. Many were only suffering from old age, and the relatives did not want to keep them. A good many oases were undesirable immigrants brought in when the public works policy was vigorous. Dr Cleghorn confirmed this. The Premier promised that the suggestions should receive the careful consideration of the Government.
